It is the intent of the Charleston DPS to provide citizens with a fair and effective avenue for redress of their legitimate grievances against members of this department, and to protect officers and other employees from false charges of misconduct or wrongdoing.

If you would like to complain about the conduct of an officer, a copy of our complaint form is available for download below.  Please complete the form and return it to the station in a sealed envelope. You may return the form by hand or mail. 

After your complaint is received, an investigation will be done. The investigation will be done as soon as possible, and you should receive notification of a disposition within 30 days. The results of the investigation will be classified as follows:

Proper Conduct:  The allegation is true, but the action of the department or the employee was consistent with department policy.

Improper Conduct:   The allegation is true and the action of the department or employee was inconsistent with departmental policy.

Insufficient Evidence:   There is insufficient evidence to prove or refute the allegation.

Unfounded Complaint:  Either the complaint is demonstrably false or there is no credible evidence to support it.
