PRESS RELEASE - BANK ROBBERY - 12/12/2013
On 12/12/2013 at about 11:20am, Charleston DPS received a call of a bomb threat at three of our local schools. While officers were investigating the bomb threats, our agency received a report of a bank robbery at Citizens Bank, located at 207 E. Commercial St in Charleston.
The local schools were evacuated according to school policy and students were transported to local churches. The SEMO Bomb Squad was notified and assisted our agency in searching the schools for explosives. None were found, and students were allowed to return to class at about 2:00pm.
Preliminary investigation indicates that the bomb threat was a diversionary tactic to tie up law enforcement resources during the bank robbery. During the robbery, two black males entered the bank, displayed handguns, and demanded cash. The two suspects fled the scene on foot with an undetermined amount of cash. The Federal Bureau of Investigation was requested and is assisting in the investigation.
The Charleston DPS appreciates the assistance given in this investigation by the Sikeston DPS, the MO State Highway Patrol, the SEMO Bomb Squad and the FBI. Anyone with information concerning this crime is urged to contact the Charleston DPS at (573) 683-3737. Updates will follow as information becomes available.
