PRESS RELEASE -  UPDATED - CRAIGSLIST ROBBERY SUSPECT ARRESTED - 12/18/2015

     On 12/16/2015, our agency investigated the third Craigslist related robbery in less than a week.  This robbery took place in the 500 block of West Ada. A female from Fairdealing, MO  had made arrangements to sell her cell phone on Craigslist to a male from Charleston.  When she arrived in town to make the sale, the phone was taken from her and the suspect fled on foot. During the investigation, a suspect was identified and subsequently arrested.  The suspect has been identified as:

Jacquon Smith, 17 of Charleston

Smith is charged with Robbery in Second Degree, and is being held in the Mississippi County Jail on $50,000 cash or surety bond.

 Again, the Charleston DPS would like to remind people to be careful when making transactions like this. We recommend you do all transactions on the parking lot of the Department of Public Safety.

     On December 15th at about 6:00pm, officers of the Charleston DPS investigated a robbery and theft of a cellular phone that took place on Ada Street.  The victim had traveled from Perryville to sell a phone he had listed on Craigslist.  The suspect grabbed the cell phone and fled the area on foot.  The victim was able to give a description of the suspect.
     During the investigation, a suspect was identified and officers began to search for him.  The suspect was located on South Street. When he was approached, he began to run. During the foot pursuit, he discarded a handgun that was later recovered. He was taken into custody a short time later.  The handgun he discarded was determined to have been reported stolen earlier in the month.  The suspect is identified as:

Marquelis Andrews, 18 of Charleston

 Andrews is currently in the Mississippi County Jail with a $50,000 cash only bond. He is charged with Robbery 2nd Degree, Receiving Stolen Property, Resisting Arrest and Unlawful Use of a Weapon.  This matter is under investigation and additional charges and arrests are possibly.

The Charleston DPS would like to remind the citizens of Charleston that the DPS parking lot and lobby are available to anyone needing a safe place to make sales from online sites such as Craigslist.
