 Update - 11/14/2013 - Shooting Suspect Returned to Missouri

     Mark Mowery has been in custody in North Carolina since July.  He declined to waive extradition and a Governor's Warrant was obtained to force his return to the State of Missouri.  On November 12th, officers of the Charleston DPS took custody of Mowery at the Cumberland County Detention Center in Fayetteville NC and returned him to Charleston.

     Mark Mowery is currently being held in the Mississippi County Jail on a warrant charging him with Assault 1st Degree, Armed Criminal Action and Unlawful Use of a Weapon. There is no bond. Mowery is suspected of shooting Leroy Atkins and his son on July 4th.

Update - 07/17/2013 - Shooting Suspect Fights Extradition

    On the afternoon of July 15th, an extradition hearing was held for Mark Mowery in Cumberland County North Carolina.  During the hearing, Mowery declined to waive extradition and return to the State of Missouri.  A Governor’s warrant will now be sought to force the return of Mowery so he can face charges of assault 1st, armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon.  This process can take up to three months.  Mowery is a suspect in the shooting of a 39 year old Charleston man and his 10 year old son on July 4th.  Additional charges are pending.

Update - 07/07/2013 - Suspect Arrested

     Mark Mowery has been arrested in the State of North Carolina. He is currently in the custody of the Veteran’s Affairs Police Department. In the near future he will be turned over to local law enforcement and extradition arrangements will begin.  He is being held on a no bond warrant charging him with Assault 1st, armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon.  The two victims in this crime are improving.

     The Charleston DPS would like to thank the many agencies that helped in this investigation. The list includes, but is not limited to the Mississippi County Sheriff’s Dept., Sikeston Department of Public Safety, Ballard County KY Sheriff’s Dept., Paducah KY Police Department, North Carolina State Police, Onslow County NC Sheriff’s Dept., Jacksonville NC Police Dept. and the Fayetteville NC Police Department.

The Charleston DPS is currently investigating a shooting that took place in Charleston near the intersection of Ironbanks and Swank Street at about 5:00pm today.  Initial reports indicate there was an argument over the use of fireworks and one of the parties involved began shooting.  Injured were a 39 year Charleston man and his 10 year old son.  Both victims were transported to an area hospital for treatment. The father’s injuries are serious and the child is in stable condition.
